Exhibition "From Arouet to Voltaire, the beginnings of a young writer at the dawn of the Enlightenment" from September 17 to November 17

24 August 2024

There was a time when the turbulent Voltaire walked the halls of our castle in Sully-sur-Loire.

300 years later, we pay tribute to him during a documentary exhibition proposed by the castle. Costumes and film extracts enhance the exhibition. Come and immerse yourself in the heart of the 18th century and understand the close link between our building and this famous writer of the Enlightenment era.

Meet us at the castle from September 17 to November 17 for this interview with Voltaire!

Voltaire and the castle of Sully-sur-Loire ...

The Château de Sully-sur-Loire has welcomed many historical, military, political and artistic figures. Among them, the famous Voltaire came three times in exile to the château in 1716, 1719 and 1721. During these visits, he left his mark on the life of the Sully court, welcomed by the 5th Duke of Sully.

A tireless writer and philosopher, he wrote a play entirely at the château: Artémire. This play, before being presented at the Comédie Française in Paris, was tested at the court of the château in the hall of honour.

What will we find in this exhibition?

This exhibition traces the early years of Voltaire's life up to about the age of 40. Indeed, having come to the castle between 1716 and 1721, it made sense for us to offer you a reading of the writer's beginnings at the dawn of the Enlightenment.

In addition to documentary panels retracing his life, a selection of costumes, film extracts and a piece of Voltaire's scene at the castle dating from the 18th century will be present.

A real journey through time in the heart of the 18th century.
